Research Topic: Urban Identities in a Late-Ottoman Frontier. A Study on the Deserted (Palia) Sagiada, Epirus-Greece
Alexandra Koumpouli is an architect and postdoctoral researcher in Folklore Studies at the University of Ioannina. She holds a Ph.D. in Archaeology and Art History from Koç University, where she examined the intersection of architecture, urbanity, and everyday life in rural Epirus during the late Ottoman period. Her current monograph expands this work by tracing how urban architectural forms and material culture circulated in provincial settings challenging ethnocentric notions of “tradition” and rethinking rural modernity within broader Mediterranean contexts. At the ASCSA, she will explore archival material, historical maps, and travelers’ accounts to further develop this research.
