Research Topic: Confession and Penance in Byzantine and Slavic Societies in the Central and Late Middle Ages (9th–15th c.)
Edward is a medievalist specializing in the social, economic, legal, and religious history of Byzantium, the Crusades, and the Slavs. He obtained his PhD from the University of Notre Dame in 2024. During his stay at the School, Edward will be working on a project based on his dissertation: a social history of confession and penance in the Byzantine Empire and areas populated by Orthodox Slavs, particularly in Bulgaria and Kyivan Rus'. Specifically, Edward will examine penitential manuscripts in the National Library of Greece, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, and the Benaki Museum.
