Research Topic: From Syllogos to Parnassos, from Istanbul to Athens: Greek Scholarly Networks and the Shaping of Byzantine Studies
Firuzan Melike Sümertaş, trained as both an architect (B.Arch, METU, Ankara) and a historian (Ph.D., Boğaziçi University,İstanbul), is a scholar of late Ottoman and early republican Istanbul. Her research explores the intersections of urban, architectural, and intellectual history, with a focus on the Greek-speaking scholarly milieu of the nineteenth century, particularly the Greek Literary Society of Constantinople (Syllogos), antiquarianism, and the rise of early urban archaeology. She has held fellowships at Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) and the University of California, Berkeley, where she also taught history. Integrating digital methods—GIS mapping, network analysis, and interactive databases—into her work, she examines the circulation of knowledge and the transformation of the built environment. She is currently a core member of the international research collaborative IstanΠόλις () and a curator of the forthcoming (Feb. 2026) Phanariot Materialities exhibition at ANAMED, Koç University, Istanbul. In her research as an Ariane Condellis Fellow at the 911±¬ÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Library of the 911±¬ÁϳԹÏ, she will explore the connections between the intellectual milieus of Istanbul and Athens in the late nineteenth century.
