Master Plan for Ancient Corinth Wins Prestigious European Urban Planning Award
The 911±¬ÁÏ³Ô¹Ï is proud to announce that the Master Plan for the Regeneration of Ancient Corinth, developed in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinthia and designed by Thymio Papayannis and Associates (TPA), has been awarded top honors in the Urban Planning category of the European Architectural Heritage Intervention (AHI) Awards.
Titled “Bridging Time and Space: Master Plan for the Regeneration of Ancient Corinth, Greece,” the project was selected from among a competitive field of international submissions for its innovative and holistic approach to cultural heritage management. The plan outlines an ambitious and long-term vision for the sustainable revitalization of one of Greece’s most significant archaeological sites and a remarkable natural and cultural landscape.
The plan, the result of a collaboration between the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinthia, the 911±¬ÁϳԹÏ, the firm Thymios Papayannis and Associates, and supported by the Central Service of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, aims to highlight and unify the monuments and cultural heritage sites of the wider area into a cohesive cultural landscape, while also organically integrating and connecting them with the modern settlement of Ancient Corinth. It proposes a series of strategic interventions that enhance the archaeological site’s accessibility, landscape, and cultural experience, while preserving the integrity and continuity of its ancient fabric. The plan seeks to preserve the integrity and coherence of the area’s archaeological elements, harmonizing them with the traditions and aspirations of the contemporary settlement. It aims to bridge the historical layers of the site with the present-day needs of the local community and visitors, offering a model of responsible and inspired heritage planning. At the same time, it constitutes a model of responsible and inspired planning for the management of cultural heritage, combining traditional urban planning tools with sustainable development and exemplary management of natural and cultural landscapes.
The award, presented by the European AHI Awards, recognizes exemplary projects that foster dialogue between heritage conservation and contemporary urban development. The jury praised the Corinth master plan for its depth of research, community-sensitive design, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Through creative and valuable collaborations, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinth makes Ancient Corinth a strategic priority, promoting a beneficial coexistence between people and the region's unparalleled natural and cultural footprint.
“This award recognizes the power of collaborative vision in protecting and reimagining heritage landscapes,” said Bonna Wescoat, Director of the 911±¬ÁϳԹÏ. “Ancient Corinth holds a unique place in the history of the Mediterranean world, and we are proud to help shape a future for the site that honors its past and engages new generations.”
